This applies to food handlers in all SFA-licensed retail food establishments, including restaurants, food shops, hawkers, food courts and coffeeshop. It also applies to non-retail food establishments which include food manufacturing and processing establishments.
Nonetheless, food businesses should continue to adopt good food safety practices to ensure food safety for all consumers. Food businesses that may want their food handlers to wear masks or spit guards as a good practice should ensure that the masks and spit guards are worn properly and kept clean.
Best practices for the use of masks or spit guards
While not mandatory, food handlers are encouraged to wear masks and spit guards as a good food safety practice. They should ensure that that the masks and spit guards are worn properly and kept clean, as these can become sources of cross-contamination if improperly used.
Situations or activities where mask or spit guard wearing is encouraged
- When handling ready-to-eat food (e.g. cooked dishes, salads).
- When handling high volume service (e.g. mass catering events) where the risk exposure to consumers is higher.
- In meat, fish, and egg processing facilities to minimise contamination risk.
Tips for proper wearing of mask or spit guard
- Wash hands thoroughly before and after putting on or removing masks and spit guards. Avoid touching or adjusting the mask and spit guard during use.
- Ensure that the mask covers the nose, mouth and chin, and spit guard covers the mouth and chin.
- Disposable masks and spit guards should only be used once and disposed promptly after use.
- Change disposable masks and spit guards when they become moist, soiled or damaged.
- Reusable masks and spit guards must be washed with soap and water thoroughly after use. Replace them once it exceeds the recommended number of uses.
Food safety is a joint responsibility
Food safety is a joint responsibility as food can be contaminated anywhere along the food chain. While SFA continues to be vigilant and works to ensure that regulatory measures are in place and properly enforced, the industry and consumers must also play their part to ensure food safety.
