SFA reviews the list of ingredients used in food sold in Singapore to verify that these ingredients have a known history of use in food and to ensure the safety of these ingredients for consumption.

Who has to ensure Chinese Medicinal Materials and ingredients in food are safe?

All food businesses selling food in Singapore must ensure that the food is safe for consumption. 

Food businesses must ensure that Chinese Medicinal Materials added to food do not have medicinal or therapeutic properties. Food, unlike medicines, should not be used to treat or alleviate medical conditions.

Businesses must also ensure that the ingredients are safe for consumption. Businesses can refer to the ingredients that has been reviewed by the SFA to check if the ingredients used in their products are safe.

In addition, businesses must ensure that they comply with SFA’s regulatory limits on food additives and incidental constituents in food. For more information, please refer to the Overview on Food Safety Regulatory Limits.
